‘Creatures Great and Small’ Exhibition

18th March to 26th May

Kitty Jones- Featured Artist

Jointly Awarded the Maude Gemmell Hutchison Prize for her Night Herons screen print.

Kittie works as a tutor at Leith School of Art whilst continuing to produce her own work for national exhibitions.

Kittie will be donating a couple of recent monoprints including this Moonlit Pheasant  to a fundraising exhibition at Leith School of Art. It aims to raise funds for the School’s Assisted Places Scheme which allows students access to their courses who would not normally be able to afford it.

In the last year she has started drawing birds and animals directly from life. The immediacy of this method of working means you have to work quickly and be prepared to make a lot of sketches to get the information you need. The first few drawings of any particular bird are always clumsy and then you start getting a feel for its particular shape and movement. Back in the studio she will work up her drawings into prints, drawings and paintings. Kittie likes to make work that contains a narrative; this is helped by bringing out a sense of character and purpose in the animals and birds that she draws. From snatched glimpses and rapid sketches, she takes what information she has and develop these into compositions made up of layers of colour for her screen prints.
