Bernard McGuigan

Bernard McGuigan

Bernard McGuigan was born in Britain in 1956 and has been stone-carving since the age of 16. Though the realities of earning a living have necessitated quite different jobs at various times, he has been carving full-time for most of his life. He is an associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and has exhibited at the Royal Academy. His work has been shown in many exhibitions over the years and features in a number of private and public collections both in this country and abroad.

He identifies and exploits the relative properties of hardness and softness, colour and texture, in a range of stones including French limestone, Welsh slate, Scottish sandstone and varieties of marble and alabaster. Responding to the nature of each and, working directly into the stone, he has developed his own distinctive approach to the representation of the human body and the female figure in particular.

The pieces are graceful and deceptively simple, in terms of both their carving style and of their tranquil potency. When first coming across an exhibition of his work, we delight in the perceived tension between stone as a reliable and in relation to our own lives, timeless material, and what we know of the yielding (and less reliable) contours of the human body. With time this sensation may be remembered in the mind like a line from a requiem, quietly insistent. In returning to his theme and its many variations, McGuigan does not set out to “challenge” us in the contemporary and confrontational sense of the word. There is no mention of “removing boundaries” in his mission statement. On the contrary, in a form of homage to the way that stones have long been used to mark boundaries and places of passage, his figures appear to define the limits of individual tenderness in a harsh and competitive world. Standing between artist and spectator, they mediate the ever-present challenge of being alive.

Gail Klevan

Jeweller

Gail Klevan

This innovative jewellery has evolved by continuous experimentation with modern acrylic materials.  The pattern and drawing refract dense colour with metallic gold and silver undertones across smooth and sculpted surfaces. These interact with the organic curvature and geometry of the highly polished optical-quality acrylic shapes creating shimmering, ever changing iridescence. Though bold, the jewellery is designed to adorn and flatter the wearer and is suitable with either casual or formal clothing and is comfortable and easy to wear for both everyday and special occasions. Like the Bakelite jewellery of the 1930′s, these elegant and striking designs will become the classics of tomorrow.

Hannah Lamb

Jewellery

Hannah Lamb

Hannah designs each piece using a skillfull technique of piercing and filing the metal into a  design by hand, she combines a feeling of contemporary and antique jewellery in her work depicting floral, fauna or fabric imagery. Inspirations  come from decorative motifs and colours from wall coverings and interior fabrics, pets, and simple iconic imagery from around the house inform elements of Hannah’s designs. Techniques used are intricate piercing, surface texturing, and traditional jewellery fabrication skills combining silver with materials such as silk, felt and semi-precious stones.

Jessicca Briggs

Jewellery

Jessica originally studied Printed and Woven Textile Design at Manchester. Later, her love of drawing, texture, pattern and colour was matched by her discovery of and love for metal.  She has combined these passions in jewellery-making for the last 16 years, finding infinite expression in the exploration, experimentation and refinement of her inspirations and techniques.

Whilst studying for an MA at Sheffield, she learnt an ancient Korean technique for fusing gold to silver.

This opened up a whole new methodology.  Making the technique her own and using it in conjunction with increasingly sophisticated texturing of sheet silver, Jessica established an individual and identifiable way of working.

Clare Caulfield – Printmaker

Clare specialises in producing limited edition screenprints and original work mainly with a theme. Her work depicts a lot of the places she has travelled to Clare also uses various printmaking techniques within her work. Her love of drawing and use of line have been developed into Drypoints and Screenprints.
Drypoint is a method of Intaglio Printmaking in which the Artist draws by scratching directly onto a metal plate with an etching needle. Every print made is original and unique. The plate also wears down after a time therefore only small editions of drypoint prints can be made.
Clare also transfers the lively drawings taken directly from her sketchbook onto paper and canvas by means of screenprinting which she combines with hand-painted acrylic. Therefore every canvas is an individual piece in itself.

Gerard Hobson - Printmaker
